What does it all have to do with beliefs?

Everyone knows what a belief is right? It is something that we have created our self, and stored in our mind somewhere. “I believe that I am the best!” is a good example of this.

PatienceOk – so what about the belief that the earth was flat. How do you figure that we created that one and stored it in our mind? To be honest, that was something created by someone else, which another person then chose to ‘BELIEVE’ and thus started the belief that the earth was flat.

So its not just something that we create our self. It could be something that someone else created. And that specific belief was probably written down somewhere, and became a fear for many long long time ago. And then, you guessed it – someone proved the belief WRONG!

Hot stove topWhen I was a kid, my mother told me the stove top was hot, and not to touch it. What did I do. I tried to prove her wrong, placed my hand on top of the stove top, and got burnt! Go figure!
As I grew older I realised that the stove top could be hot if it had been recently used, and that this would burn me if I put my hand on top of it. Did I change my belief, or was it a modification of the ‘parameters’ that would test for true or false, depending on other circumstances?

To me, this just proves that beliefs are ever changing, modifying, being formed, re-thought and shaped as we progress. Not all beliefs will change. Not all beliefs need to change. Its very true that the belief that sleep is good for you, has probably stayed true throughout the ages as it is the bodies natural way of ‘re-charging.’
Beliefs form an integral part of who we are.

As a ThetaHealer, you would know that beliefs are the starting point of many good and many bad things that happen. And as a ThetaHealer you would know that a belief is something that is formed, and stored in the mind, to become a subconscious action or reaction to a piece of information that the mind receives.

You say you are not a ThetaHealer? Well then welcome to the world of beliefs! In a nutshell, I would use my stove top as a belief checker for you. Do you believe that the stove top will burn you? If you answered yes, then this is probably because you either have first hand experience (like me) or you have learnt this from watching someone else or something else coming into contact with a hot stove top. If you answered no, then it is possible that you could be doubting the fact of whether the stove was turned on recently and whether or not it has cooled down sufficiently so that it does not burn. The answer lies in you being able to reason, from a belief you have within you, that if the stove top had been on, it could burn, yet if it had not been turned on for sufficient time, it would be cold and thus not burn you. Now very quickly think – if you saw a red hot stove top, and felt heat emanating from the stove top, your gut reaction would be to avoid the stove top, as it would burn you.

The stove top is an example of a belief that you have formed, which has resulted in a protection mechanism being created in your mind, to protect you from being burnt. If you don’t have that belief that the stove top can burn and hurt if hot, then please don’t go try this at home. It will hurt!

This protective mechanism is in essence similar to the way in which we behave, react, act and go about our lives on a daily basis, hour to hour, minute to minute, second to second. Beliefs is what it is all about.

  • Do you believe that you were destined to become a great leader? Why?
  • Do you believe that you are always going to be poor? Why?
  • Do you believe that you will never find love? Why?

If you take a second and think about things, you will realise that some of the most profound beliefs you have are as a result of beliefs associated with or learnt from family, friends, relatives and even society. There are various influences that have resulted in the formation of your beliefs, some passed on, some learnt first hand, others yet to form. And it is this discovery of these beliefs and some of the influences on your beliefs, that family ties starts to work with, discover, identify, and give you the ability to change (if you need to of course!)

And don’t forget, what I describe as family ties in this sense includes society, peers, relationships, parents, ancestors and many others.
